Irreversible work and inner friction in quantum thermodynamic processes.

چکیده
We discuss the thermodynamics of closed quantum systems driven out of equilibrium by a change in a control parameter and undergoing a unitary process. We compare the work actually done on the system with the one that would be performed along ideal adiabatic and isothermal transformations. The comparison with the latter leads to the introduction of irreversible work, while that with the former leads to the introduction of inner friction. We show that these two quantities can be treated on an equal footing, as both can be linked with the heat exchanged in thermalization processes and both can be expressed as relative entropies. Furthermore, we show that a specific fluctuation relation for the entropy production associated with the inner friction exists, which allows the inner friction to be written in terms of its cumulants.

Irreversible performance of a quantum harmonic heat engine
The unavoidable irreversible loss of power in a heat engine is found to be of quantum origin. Following thermodynamic tradition a model quantum heat engine operating in an Otto cycle is analyzed, where the working medium is composed of an ensemble of harmonic oscillators and changes in volume correspond to changes in the curvature of the potential well. Equations of motion for quantum observabl...
متن کاملOn exact identity between thermodynamic and informatic entropies in a unitary model of friction
An elementary collision model of a molecular reservoir is considered upon which an external field is applied and the work is dissipated into heat. To realize macroscopic irreversibility at the microscopic level, we introduce a “graceful” irreversible map which randomly mixes the identities of the molecules. This map is expected to generate informatic entropy exactly equal to the independently c...
متن کاملShannon information increase and rescue in friction
On the standard microscopic model of friction we confirm the common belief that the irreversible entropy production originates from the increase of Shannon information. We reveal that the reversible microscopic dynamics would continuously violate the Gibbsian interchangeability of molecules. The spontaneous restoration of interchangeability constitutes the mechanism of irreversibility. This is ...
متن کاملNonequilibrium Quantum Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics *
The purpose of this work is to discuss recent progress in deriving the fundamental laws of thermodynamics (0, 1 and 2-law) from nonequilibrium quantum statistical mechanics. Basic thermodynamic notions are clarified and different reversible and irreversible thermodynamic processes are studied from the point of view of quantum statistical mechanics. Special emphasis is put on new adiabatic theor...
متن کاملDescription of quantum coherence in thermodynamic processes requires constraints beyond free energy
Recent studies have developed fundamental limitations on nanoscale thermodynamics, in terms of a set of independent free energy relations. Here we show that free energy relations cannot properly describe quantum coherence in thermodynamic processes. By casting time-asymmetry as a quantifiable, fundamental resource of a quantum state, we arrive at an additional, independent set of thermodynamic ...
